Students Launch Fair Trade Project through the Laurus Friendship Initiative

We recently invited a guest speaker to lead a discussion with our Primary School students - a nun who helps impoverished communities in the Philippines. The students were shocked at the living conditions and expressed desire to do something to help - this launched what we now call the Laurus Friendship Initiative.

The students decided on a fair trade project in which they would ask locals in the Philippines to make bags to hold the iPads, sell them in Japan, and donate the profits to charity. It involved an initial design development stage, sample making and design refinement, and finally, production of the bags.

Our guest speaker (name) speaks to students about the efforts made to help the slums of the Philippines.

STEM education is an iterative problem-solving process of development, testing and refinement. Through this project, students had the opportunity to put their STEM knowledge to work while contributing to improved livelihoods and sustainable business.
