Biomimicry - Built by Nature
Discover how nature inspires invention! Through biomimicry, hands-on experiments, design challenges, and an excursion to see real-world examples, students create nature-inspired prototypes and present them at our Spring Inventors Expo—connecting science, creativity, and innovation.
-
The programme begins with an icebreaker session, followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of biomimicry. Students will explore how nature solves problems and discover how these natural strategies can inspire new inventions.
-
Students will take part in a field trip to Ueno Zoo to learn about the structures and mechanisms found in living organisms. By observing animals directly, they will gain a deeper understanding of how nature works and use these insights as inspiration for their own inventions.
-
Based on their observations and discoveries, students will begin the design process. Through sketching and planning, they will develop their ideas into concrete concepts.
On the same day, designer and engineer Yuta Ikeya will lead a special workshop exploring the relationship between nature and technology.
-
Students will begin creating their products based on their designs. Through iterative improvements and hands-on work, they will gradually transform their ideas into tangible creations.
-
On the final day, students will present their completed inventions at the Spring Inventors Expo. They will explain the inspiration behind their ideas and the features of their designs in English, sharing their learning with one another and celebrating the achievements of the week.
Please note that the time schedule is subject to change.
Nature and Technology Workshop
In this programme, we will welcome designer and engineer Yuta Ikeya for a special workshop exploring the relationship between nature and technology.
One of Ikeya’s works, “Metamorphonic,” is a design project that reads the movements of silkworms using sensors and transforms those changes into sound.
Through this work, students will explore how the movements of familiar living creatures can be connected with technology to create new forms of expression.
The session encourages students to develop their observation skills and expand their ways of thinking, while reflecting on questions such as how we observe nature and how technology can be used creatively. It offers an opportunity to nurture both scientific curiosity and creativity.

Engineering the Illusion: A STEAM-Based Cinematic Experience
Explore the science behind movie-making. Students investigate motion, sound, light, and special effects through hands-on activities, learn how cameras and microphones work, and collaborate in teams to plan, film, and edit an original short movie. The programme concludes with a cinematic excursion and a red-carpet-style screening and awards ceremony.

Students experiment with lighting and sound techniques, conduct camera tests to compare visual expression, and develop storyboards for their films.
-
After preparing for production, students learn from a guest instructor. After the lesson, they begin filming their scenes collaboratively. (Details are provided below.)
-
Students gather additional footage as needed and learn editing techniques to assemble and refine their work.

Analogue Filmmaking Workshop
On Day 3, designer and engineer Yuta Ikeya will join as a guest instructor to lead an analogue filmmaking workshop.
He has explored the mechanics of film photography using a motion picture camera he designed and produced with a 3D printer, and his work has been featured in international media.

Seasonal Events Parent Testimonials
My son joined for five days and really enjoyed all the fun activities.
He was so excited to go every single day.
Thank you so much.
- A Parent from Seasonal Camp (Preschool & Kindergarten)
My son was very shy on the first day, but from the second day on, he came home smiling and saying how much he enjoyed the program.
As a working parent, having such opportunities is incredibly valuable for us. We would love to join again next time!
- A Parent from Seasonal School (Primary School )
It was very well organized. My child had a great time and felt she gained a lot from the program. We’re even considering transferring her to Laurus Secondary School.
